The Innsbruck (red) "ROCKET" snow ski is a rare example of late 1950s Austrian ski manufacturing. Produced by the small Innsbruck factory, this pre-owned ski features a distinctive hand-painted top sheet and lacquered bases, setting it apart from the more common plastic-based skis of the era. With over 210cm in length, the "ROCKET" is a vintage downhill racing ski designed for giant slalom and race conditions.

Brand and Model Context

ODDBALL skis represent a niche segment of vintage ski manufacturing, with the Innsbruck factory being a smaller Austrian producer compared to larger brands like Kastle or Fischer. The "ROCKET" model is notable for its construction, utilizing 22 laminations of wood primarily composed of ash mixed with pine. This combination provides durability and performance suited for competitive skiing in the 1950s. The skis were originally designed for downhill racing and giant slalom events, reflecting the ski technology and style of the pre-war and post-war periods. The use of lacquered bases, possibly cellulose, rather than plastic, is a distinctive feature of this model. The skis were made in Austria and are associated with the winter sports culture of the time, including Olympic-level competition.

Condition and Details

This particular pair of Innsbruck "ROCKET" skis is pre-owned and has been used, with one set of holes drilled for Marker Rotomat bindings. The skis remain in very good condition given their age, a rarity for skis from the 1950s. The hand-painted red top sheet shows minimal wear, and the lacquered bases are well preserved. The skis are recommended for use with period-specific Marker Rotomat bindings to maintain authenticity and performance. The edges, shape, and overall structure have been carefully maintained, making this pair a valuable find for collectors and vintage ski enthusiasts. Although currently sold and archived for reference, these skis exemplify the craftsmanship and design of mid-century Austrian race skis.
