The 1986 K2 Super G SGS-TEAM vintage snow ski is a rare and highly collectible piece from K2’s American racing heritage. Measuring 212cm, this ski represents one of K2’s top-tier race-room builds, designed for serious downhill and giant slalom competition. Its construction and design reflect the brand’s pioneering fiberglass and foam-core technology that helped establish K2 as a leader in ski innovation.
Brand and Model Context
K2 was founded in 1962 on Vashon Island, Washington by Bill Kirschner, who experimented with fiberglass ski construction and early foam-core concepts. This innovation positioned K2 as a major American ski manufacturer with a strong influence in racing and freestyle skiing culture. The Super G SGS-TEAM is part of K2’s limited-edition race skis, featuring the iconic red, white, and blue graphics that collectors seek. This model is built with a wet fiberglass wrap over a wood-core torsion box, a construction technique similar to the Dynamic VR17 skis used by Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy.
The SGS-TEAM includes two layers of metal for added strength and vibration damping, enhancing performance in downhill and giant slalom racing. It was equipped with Salomon 2nd to 3rd generation DerbyFlex race plates and compatible with Salomon Driver Race Bindings. This ski was a personal favorite bump ski and a “top dog” in K2’s alpine race room, though it remains less recognized than other K2 models like the 710-FO or 810-FO.
Condition and Details
This pair of 1986 K2 Super G SGS-TEAM skis is in very good used condition. The edges show surface rust that can be removed with a thorough sharpening and tune-up. Bases are in good shape but will benefit from waxing before use. The skis feature serial number 212R 80329 and retain their original white base color with bold blue graphics and red highlights. They embody the classic race ski aesthetic and performance characteristics of K2’s mid-1980s competition lineup.
These skis are over 210cm in length, making them suitable for collectors and enthusiasts interested in authentic vintage race skis with proven all-mountain capability. When tuned with a sharp 90-degree edge from tip to tail, they excel in bump skiing and aggressive downhill conditions.
